Background of the Study
Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State, Nigeria, has faced significant challenges related to drug abuse, particularly among youth. The growing prevalence of drug abuse in Lokoja is partly driven by a complex combination of socio-political and economic factors, which have been exacerbated by geopolitical strategies at both the state and national levels. Geopolitical strategies, such as law enforcement, regional collaborations, and resource allocation for public health initiatives, are crucial in combating the menace of drug abuse. These strategies often reflect the political priorities and the resource availability in the region. Lokoja’s strategic location as a central point of transportation between the north and south of Nigeria has also made it a significant transit point for the distribution of illegal substances (Adama & Okoro, 2023). Consequently, the effectiveness of the geopolitical strategies employed in Lokoja plays a critical role in determining the success of efforts to curb drug abuse. This study will explore the geopolitical strategies used to address drug abuse in Lokoja LGA, assessing their impacts and the challenges faced in implementing these strategies.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Drug abuse has become a pressing issue in Lokoja LGA, fueled by easy access to illicit substances and a lack of effective intervention strategies. Geopolitical factors, such as government policies, regional coordination, and the presence of transnational drug cartels, have complicated efforts to control the spread of drug abuse. Despite the implementation of various strategies at the local and state levels, drug abuse continues to rise, especially among the youth. This study aims to investigate the role of these geopolitical strategies in combating drug abuse in Lokoja and to identify any gaps that may hinder their effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the effectiveness of the geopolitical strategies employed to combat drug abuse in Lokoja LGA.

  • To evaluate the role of local, state, and national government policies in the fight against drug abuse in Lokoja.

  • To propose improvements to the current strategies based on geopolitical considerations.

1.4 Research Questions

  • What are the key geopolitical strategies employed in Lokoja LGA to combat drug abuse?

  • How effective are these strategies in addressing the root causes of drug abuse in the region?

  • What policy changes or interventions can improve the current approach to combating drug abuse in Lokoja?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical strategies, including regional cooperation and law enforcement efforts, play a significant role in controlling drug abuse in Lokoja LGA.

  • Despite existing strategies, drug abuse remains prevalent due to insufficient implementation and coordination of these policies.

  • Implementing more targeted geopolitical strategies will reduce drug abuse in Lokoja LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the body of knowledge on the relationship between geopolitical strategies and the control of drug abuse, particularly in regions like Lokoja, where drug trafficking and abuse are rampant. The findings will offer valuable insights for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to enhance existing strategies and tackle the growing drug abuse problem. By examining the effectiveness of current geopolitical strategies, this study will help develop more sustainable solutions for drug abuse in Lokoja and similar regions in Nigeria (Adama & Okoro, 2023).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Lokoja Local Government Area in Kogi State and investigates the impact of geopolitical strategies on drug abuse. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing detailed data on drug-related arrests and the coordination between local and state agencies involved in drug control efforts.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Strategies: Political and administrative measures, including law enforcement, regional cooperation, and public health initiatives, aimed at combating issues like drug abuse.

  • Drug Abuse: The illicit consumption of controlled substances that leads to addiction, health complications, and social disruption.

  • Lokoja Local Government Area: The administrative region in Kogi State, Nigeria, known for being a transit hub for drugs and having a significant drug abuse problem (Adama & Okoro, 2023).
